John Ruskin, whose work often emulated Prout’s, wrote in 1844, “Sometimes I tire of Turner, but never of Prout”. Prout is often compared to his contemporaries; Turner, Gainsborough, Constable and Ruskin, whom he taught.
The Tate Gallery has another picture by Samuel Prout of the same subject, a print of which is in the Collection.
In 1870 Ruskin produced a small book titled ‘Samuel Prout by John Ruskin M.A.’ a 10 page appreciation of Samuel Prout by John Ruskin. It is one of the rarest items in our Collection.
